After an exceptional performance in Saturday’s on-the-hoof judging at the Royal Fat Stock Show at Lions River Sale Yard, it was almost a clean sweep of awards for Duncan Watson and the Brangus breed in the 2025 Royal Carcass Competition, judged on Tuesday by Chris Ngeleza and Selvan Odayan from SAMIC.

Watson claimed the prestigious 2025 Royal Show Champion Beef Carcass award, along with both First and Second Reserve Champion Beef Carcass titles. Notably, his First Reserve Champion Carcass had been judged Reserve Champion Animal on the Hoof on Saturday.

Watson’s dominance extended to the group classes, securing both the Champion Beef Group and First Reserve Champion Beef Group awards. In the Super Ox category, he also earned the Reserve Champion Super Ox title.

The carcass judging took place at Halaal Fresh Meats Abattoir in Thornville, with the winning carcasses acquired by Clover Meats, a speciality Durban butchery, for their discerning clientele.

“Duncan’s exceptional Brangus entries truly elevated this year’s competition,” said Wayne Muller, General Manager of the Royal Agricultural Society. “We are delighted he chose to showcase them at the Royal.”

The Society extends its gratitude to Chris Ngeleza and Selvan Odayan of SAMIC for their expertise and dedication, as well as to RPO KZN and SAFJA for their invaluable support in ensuring the overall success of the 2025 Royal Fat Stock Show and Carcass Competition.

“This year’s event was a resounding success, showcasing agricultural heritage, community spirit, and a commitment to excellence,” Muller reflected. “We look forward to welcoming everyone back for our historic 175th anniversary show in 2026.”

The 2026 Royal Agricultural Show, marking this significant milestone, will take place from 29 May to 3 June at the Royal’s new venue, Tweedie Hall, just outside Howick in the KZN Midlands.
