THE BEST OF THE BREED
Breeders will travel from across South Africa to present some of their finest sheep before the judges, with animals competing for the highest honours of the National Show.
For those involved in the sheep industry, it is an opportunity to see leading Dormer genetics and breeding stock gathered in one place, to compare animals from some of the country's foremost breeders, and to meet the people helping to shape the future of the breed.
For the wider Royal Show visitor, it offers something equally special: the chance to see some of the best Dormer sheep in South Africa competing at the highest level of breed showing.
ABOUT THE DORMER
The Dormer is a proudly South African breed, developed for local farming conditions and today firmly established as one of the country's important meat-sheep and terminal-sire breeds.
Known for its fertility, hardiness, adaptability and efficient meat production, the Dormer plays an important role in commercial and stud sheep production across South Africa.
The National Show represents the culmination of years of careful selection and breeding. Animals are assessed against the standards and characteristics sought by the breed, making the show ring both a competition and a showcase of progress within the Dormer industry.
A NATIONAL EVENT
AT THE ROYAL
Agricultural competition has been at the heart of the Royal Show since its earliest years, and hosting the Dormer National Show during the Society's 175th anniversary year is especially fitting.
As the only National Show being staged as part of the 2026 Royal Show, it will occupy a special place in this year's livestock programme, bringing breeders, judges, farmers and visitors together at the new Royal Show grounds at Tweedie Hall.
Whether you are a Dormer breeder, a commercial sheep farmer, an agricultural student or simply curious to see what makes a national-quality stud animal, make time to visit the sheep section on Friday, 9 October.
