Sheep and Goats Take Centre Stage at the October Royal Agricultural Show
The October Royal Agricultural Show will place a strong spotlight on South Africa’s sheep and goat breeders, with a focused small stock programme that brings together breed competition, fat stock excellence, interbreed Gold Cup honours and the prestigious Royal Carcass Competition and Auction.
The Sheep and Goats section will offer breeders, judges, buyers, agricultural specialists and small stock enthusiasts a valuable opportunity to engage with some of the country’s leading genetics, carcass prospects and breed champions.
The programme will feature strong representation across both sheep and goats, with goat breeds including Boer goats, Savanna goats and Kalahari Reds. In the sheep section, regional championships will be contested for Suffolk, Dorper, Ile de France, Hampshire Down and Dormer.
A number of breeders are expected to travel considerable distances to participate, with entries anticipated from KwaZulu-Natal as well as from provinces such as the Eastern Cape, Free State, Northern Cape and North West. This commitment reflects the continued standing of the Royal Agricultural Show as a respected platform for livestock competition, agricultural excellence and meaningful industry connection.
Breed competition and Gold Cup honours
Breed judging for the sheep regionals will take place across the week, building towards the highly anticipated Interbreed Competition on Saturday morning, 10 October. This competition will determine the Show’s leading interbreed sheep champions, who will be recognised as Royal Show Gold Cup winners.
The goat interbreed judging will follow on from the breed judging earlier in the week.
The Royal Show Gold Cup awards remain among the most sought-after honours on the livestock calendar. For breeders, these awards represent not only excellence in the show ring, but also years of careful selection, preparation and commitment to breed quality.
Royal Carcass Competition and Auction
One of the major highlights of the section will be the Royal Carcass Competition and Auction, linked to the lamb fat stock competition and culminating on Saturday, 10 October with the auction and prizegiving.
The Royal Carcass Competition is one of the most prestigious elements of the livestock programme, recognising outstanding fat stock and carcass merit. Entries are assessed on the hoof by SAFJA and on the hook by SAMIC as part of a serious commercial benchmark for producers, buyers and industry specialists.
The Saturday auction is expected to attract strong interest from bidders looking for quality, provenance and prestige. Organisers are hopeful that this year’s competition will deliver exceptional prices, rewarding breeders for the quality of their stock and reinforcing the commercial value of excellence in small stock production.
A focused platform for serious breeders and buyers
The Sheep and Goats section offers far more than a traditional show-ring programme. It provides a concentrated meeting point for breeders, buyers, judges, agricultural businesses and small stock enthusiasts who understand the value of genetics, presentation, carcass quality and breed standards.
The October Royal Agricultural Show continues to honour its long agricultural heritage while providing a relevant and competitive platform for the livestock industry today. This year’s small stock programme will play a central role in that purpose, celebrating the breeders who continue to invest in quality sheep and goat production across South Africa.
