For 175 years, the Royal Agricultural Society has hosted the Royal Agricultural Show, an outstanding showcase of the best commercial and stud sheep from KwaZulu-Natal and beyond.
The country’s top sheep breeders travel to the Show from across South Africa, and we greatly appreciate their efforts.
Stud sheep competitions
Each year, the Royal Agricultural Society proudly hosts breed championships for esteemed sheep breeds including Dormer, Ile de France, Suffolk, Hampshire Down and Dorper.
These competitions are meticulously organised in collaboration with the respective provincial and national breed societies, ensuring impartiality through judges appointed by each society.
At the pinnacle of every Royal Agricultural Show, the triumphant champions from these breed-specific contests advance to the prestigious Interbreed Championships. Here, they vie for the revered Royal Agricultural Society Gold Cup Awards and the ultimate accolade of Supreme Champion—a testament to excellence in stud sheep breeding.
RAS Supreme Champions are determined through an exacting evaluation process, conducted by South Africa's most seasoned and esteemed judges, whose expertise upholds the highest standards of integrity and discernment.
Securing a Gold Cup Award not only elevates the prestige of the winning breeders and their exemplary animals but also bestows enduring recognition within the industry.
This distinguished honour significantly enhances opportunities for sales of rams, ewes, semen, and embryos, particularly during the subsequent winter sale season and well into the future, fostering lasting success and legacy in the world of stud sheep.
