The 2022 Royal Show will see the hosting of the KZN leg of the Toyota SA National Young Auctioneer Competition; an event initiated in 2013 by Plaas Media, under the umbrella of its magazines, Veeplaas and Stockfarm. This promises to be an exciting event, both for participants and competitors.

Calling Young Auctioneers!

Open to interested persons in the young category 19 to 35 years, the competition is held to promote the livestock auctioneering profession.

Participants are judged in categories according to rostrum performance, and livestock knowledge.

In advance of the finals which are scheduled to take place at the Nampo Cape show in Bredasdorp in September; four regional competitions will be held across the country, with the KZN leg taking place on Monday, 30 May. No actual sale takes place, the auction – whilst realistic – is fictional in nature, with cattle on display constituting the subject matter.

The first-place winner will receive a Toyota SA hamper, prize money of R1 000 sponsored by the Royal Show, and financial assistance to attend and participate in the final held at Nampo Cape. The second-place contestant will receive a Plaas Media hamper and R500 sponsored by the Royal Show, and will accompany the first-place winner to the finals. The third-placed contestant will receive R500 sponsored by the Royal Show.

The winner in the final round of the ‘young’ category will progress to represent South Africa in an international event in 2023 in Canada, at the Calgary Stampede’s International Auctioneering Competition.

See the Young Auctioneers in Action!

Aside from affording participants and observers with an interesting and at times light-hearted experience, the primary purpose is to give aspiring auctioneers an opportunity to portray their ability, with a view to possibly enter the auctioneering profession at some future date.

The ideal participant would be confident, charismatic and have a thespian leaning. If required, the Royal Agricultural Society will gladly arrange to have a knowledgeable person spend a short while with participants to appraise them of the attributes of cattle, and more specifically, that forming the subject of the auction.
