The 2019 Royal Show will see the hosting of the KZN leg of the Toyota SA National Young Auctioneer Competition – an event initiated in 2013 by Veeplaas and Stockfarm magazines. This promises to be an exciting event, both for participants and competitors.
Open to interested persons in two categories; Juniors 19 and younger, and young persons 35 years and younger the competition is held to promote the livestock auctioneering profession.
Participants are judged in categories according to rostrum performance, and livestock knowledge.
In advance of the finals which are scheduled to take place at the Alfa Show in Parys in September, five regional competitions will be held across the country, with the KZN leg taking place on Monday, 27 May at the Royal Show, No actual sale takes place, the auction – whilst realistic – is fictional in nature, with cattle on display constituting the subject matter.
The winners of the Young Persons competition will receive prize money of R2 000 whilst that os the Junior Category will receive R1 000. Additional prize monies will follow in respect of second and third placed participants.
The competition will again be judged by Angus Williamson, to be assisted by Gavin Matthews, a previous KZN winner who progressed to win the Nationals in 2017, and represented South Africa abroad a year later.
Aside from affording participants and observers with an interesting and at times lighthearted experience, the primary purpose is to give budding youngsters an opportunity to portray their ability, with a view to possibly entering the auctioneering profession at some future date.
The ideal participant would have a charismatic, thespian leaning, who would be prepared to spend a couple of hours appraising himself as to the attributes of cattle.
If required, the Royal Agricultural Society will gladly arrange to have a knowledgeable person spend a short while with participants to appraise them of the attributes of cattle, and more specifically, that forming the subject of the auction.
