The Royal Symphony at The Royal Show, featuring the KZN Youth Orchestra and The Wykeham Collegiate Senior Wind Ensemble, takes place on Sunday, May 29 at 11am at the Royal Show Grounds in Pietermaritzburg.

The broad melodies of popular music everyone loves to hear combined with robust rhythms of marches and lilting sway of a waltz, will have local audiences enthralled when the Royal Symphony, now in its ninth year, captivates with a magical compilation of rousing and elegant classics performed by the cream of young KZN talent.

Making It Possible

The Royal Symphony Concert, presented by the Royal Show and Parklane SUPERSPAR, in association with the KZN Philharmonic and Christopher Duigan’s Music Revival, takes place on Sunday morning, May 29 on the Great Stage of the Main Arena.

Who Will Be Performing:

The programme for the KZN Youth Orchestra is conducted by South African, Lykele Temmingh. Comprising  65 young excellent musicians from all around KZN province., between the ages of 10 and 18, the orchestra meet once a week in Durban to rehearse a varied repertoire. Their current concerts, under the batons of Lykele Temmingh and Cathy Peacock, present a variety of music from Baroque and Classical to jazz and South African contemporary music thus providing excellent family entertainment.

Their performance at Royal Symphony programme includes classics Capriccio Espangnole  – Rimsky-Korsakoff, Fantasia from Bizet’s ‘Carmen’ and popular numbers Theme from Rocky, Bohemian Rhapsody, What a wonderful World, Jupiter  and the evergreen Lion Sleeps tonight.

The legendary and inspiring Janine Theron leads the The Wykeham Collegiate Senior Wind Ensemble in a complementary selection that includes the ‘Emperor’ waltz – Johann Strauss,  ‘James Bond Theme’,   ‘Funiculi, Funicula’,  and popular marches ‘Radetsky’ and Colonel Bogey’.  Their presentation also includes a number of memorable film music selections.

When and Where?

Extensive seating will be provided in the Main Arena and on the Grandstands. It is recommended that hats and/or umbrellas are included in your ‘bring alongs’ should it be a warm day.
