Ricus Nel’s talent and passion for music has made him a household name in South African music over the past few years. Fingers who can do as well with a pen as with a whole bunch of musical instruments and his coarse country rock voice have made this singer appeal to thousands of music lovers.
Ricus started playing his first instrument – drums – at the age of 4, which would eventually become one of thirteen instruments he would go on to master. He borrowed his talents from several major names, DVD productions and TV series, featuring Theuns Jordaan and Juanita du Plessis duet DVD, Bok van Blerk’s orchestra, KKNK, Skouspel, Innibos, ‘Dis hoe dit is met Steve’ and ‘Jukebox’ with Kurt Darren. He also performed in London during the old UKasie fees as well as for audiences in Australia, Canada and the United States.
Ricus released his first solo album, ‘Sak en pak’, in 2011. It was received with overwhelming support from South African audiences and later reached gold status. This was followed by the release of ‘Sout van die Aarde’ in 2013, and ‘Ricus Nel sing Don Williams en ander country legendes’ in 2014 – an album that has also surpassed the golden mark in just a few months.
Original hits such as ‘Sak en Pack’, ‘Spyt kom te laat’, and ‘Nogsteeds verlang vir haar’, as well as Ricus’ interpretations of ‘I recall a gypsy woman’, ‘Some broken hearts never mend’, ‘You’re my best friend’ and ‘Lay down beside me’ made on national radio rankings.
