You might be surprised to learn that many city youth are completely oblivious to the fact that milk, butter and cheese come from dairy cows, or even that hamburgers come from cattle raised for beef!
Being an integral part of South African agriculture, cattle are a central focus at the Royal Show. With a range of dairy and beef cattle on display, city dwellers have an unprecedented opportunity for an ‘up close and personal’ experience with these animals and to learn more about the ‘farm to fork’ process.
The cattle section of the Royal Show, drawing entries from around the country, is considered one of the country’s leading agricultural shows by the industry. A highlight for agricultural students, farmers and breeders is the Standard Bank Gold Cup Parade – the prestigious parade of champions which takes place in the main arena on the Wednesday of the Show.
Other highlights include the Heifer and Weiner competitions, and the Royal Show Carcass Competition, which is considered by breeders and buyers alike to be the premier event on the South African Red Meat Calendar, with three national and one international record being set in its 25-year history.
Apart from looking at and learning about different types of cattle on display in pens, the Dairy Parlour aims to educate with interactive demonstrations and displays. Check out the FAQ or contact us today to find out more!
