A fascinating new attraction at the 2016 Royal Show – educational shark demonstrations, including shark dissections, by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board.
The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board is a one-of-a-kind-organisation, and is mandated to be a global leader in bather protection against sharks, whilst minimising environmental impact. The KwaZulu-Natal coastline is the only coastline with 37 beaches equipped with bather safety gear, owned and maintained by the KZNSB.
The KZNSB also conducts research into the biology of sharks, and runs dynamic audio-visual shows at its premises in Umhlanga to educate the general public, to educate and raise awareness of sharks and their place in the ecosystem. Shark dissections form part of the whole learning experience – these sharks are captured from the safety gear during routine servicing at protected beaches.
Come along to the Riverstage and see a ‘shark show’ for yourself! Learn about the sensory biology of sharks, their feeding and breeding habits, and all about their role as top predators in the marine environment. See the internal anatomy of one of the ocean’s most awesome creatures, and even find out what a shark’s teeth and skin feels like!
